Can I check out library materials if I'm not a Penn State student, staff or faculty member?

Yes, residents of Pennsylvania can register with the libraries and obtain a Community Borrower's card and/or become a Friend of Penn State. Click these links to learn more.

Please note, after registering with the libraries, you must become a Friend of Penn State (using the link above) to view your library account online to renew books, place holds and more.

What is LIAS?

LIAS (Library Information Access System), with its online catalog, The CAT, is used to identify and locate Penn State materials. It also provides access to full-text services, Internet gateways, World Wide Web, and many specialized databases, including library catalogs from other institutions around the world.

How do I search for materials?

The CAT, Penn State University's online catalog, provides access to books, journals, government documents, music resources, maps, special collections, and archives in the Penn State University Libraries. The Penn State collections total over 4 million items statewide. More than 80,000 volumes are added annually. For additional help, Ask! a Librarian.

What is the loan period for items at the library?

The standard period for regular loans is 28 days. Faculty, staff, graduate students and honor students are given semester loans. Videos and CDs loan for one week. All loaned materials are subject to recall. Please consult the University Libraries Lending Code for more information.

How do I request books or journal articles not owned by the Greater Allegheny Campus Library?

Books and other materials owned by another Penn State Campus: From a full display citation screen, click the "I Want It" button and enter the requested information.

Books not owned by Penn State and articles from Journals not owned at your Campus Library: Use ILLiad, an Interlibrary Loan service.

How many items can I borrow at once?

Undergraduates can borrow 100 items at any one time. Graduates, University Scholars/Honor students, faculty and staff may borrow 200 items. Pennsylvania residents may borrow 20 items.

How do I recall a book if someone else already has it checked out?

Materials that other borrowers request are subject to recall after the current borrower has had them for seven days. The library will allow an additional ten days of use after it sends a recall notice. To recall a book from the full display screen, click on the "I Want It" button and enter the requested information.

How do I renew books?

From LIAS click on "My Library Account."

What other databases besides The CAT do I have access to?

There are over 300 databases available on LIAS. Some of them include full-text articles. Browse this complete description of all the databases or choose a database by subject area.

How long does it take to receive books and periodical articles from other Penn State locations?

Generally, you should receive your materials within a week. Articles ordered through ILLiad will be received in your Penn State email account.

How do I get access to LIAS from my home or office?

You can access LIAS from anywhere with Internet access. If you are off campus, you will be prompted to enter your PSU username and password to access databases and your library account.


The library and computer lab offers a CD called PAC-ITS. With the PAC-ITS CD Penn State faculty, staff and students may download Eudora [email software], Norton Anti-Virus software, and an the VPN Client required to gain access to the wireless IInternet Connection on Penn State campuses.
