A Quick Guide to using Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

After you have registered with the University Libraries, you can request materials from other campuses and other academic libraries around the state using the following instructions.

If you are requesting a book your found in our PSU Online Library Catalog (The CAT)

You find a book using the online library catalog (The CAT).
But it isn't available in the your local campus Library.

What do you do?

1. Click the "details" button next to the title of the book on your search results page.

 

2. Click the "I want it" button that appears on the left on the details page.
 

3. Sign in using your PSU username and password in the box that appears.
 

4. Choose “ Greater Allegheny” for the pick-up location.

(If you are a GA student/faculty/staff... if you are at another campus, choose your campus library.)
Then click the “Place Hold" button below.
 

You will then see a confirmation page.
Within a few days, you will receive an email informing you of the book's arrival.

To see what books you have requested, click the "My Library Account" link on the CAT or on LIAS.

If you need a book that isn't in the Penn State University Libraries

You can search all of the academic libraries in Pennsylvania using

1. Go to E-Z Borrow and log in using your Penn State ID and password. 

2. Then click on "Searching/Requesting"
 

3. Type in the title or other search information. Then click "Begin Searching."

 

4. From the list that appears, click on the title of the book you want to request.

5. On the screen that opens, click

6. On the Create Request screen that will appear next, be sure to make the pickup location "McKeesport" (this system has not yet updated to "Greater Allegheny).

7. Then click

You will receive an email when the book arrives for you at the GA library.

If you are requesting an article using GET IT

You are searching an article database (such as ProQuest) and there is no full text for an article that you want.

What do you do?

Click the blue button (or the words "Get It") next to the article you wish to retrieve.

It will be the blue "GET IT" button

Or it will look like this:

There are two possible outcomes, after you click "Get It":

Possibility 1:

You click "GET IT" and another window opens, listing an alternative database where you can find the full text.

It will look something like this:

Click the hyperlink provided there to access the full text.

Possibility 2: The new window says:


Click on the ILLiad link to request the article.
(You will receive an email within a few days, usually with a link to the article online.)
