Better World Books for ILL
Better World Books collects and sells books online to fund literacy initiatives worldwide. BWB has thousands of used books for sale with free shipping. It also buys back selected books. Would it be cost effective to use BWB to fulfill interlibrary loan requests? To answer this, Penn State Interlibrary Loan examined patron's requests to determine if buying and reselling books using Better World Books would be feasible to fulfill interlibrary loan requests. This poster session will discuss the study and our conclusion.
Floating Collections>
'If the University Libraries collection is one collection geographically dispersed, why do we have to ship our books back to the library of origin after they have been borrowed by a patron?' In response to this question, Penn State University Libraries charged a task force to examine the feasibility of a 'floating collection.' A Floating Collection is a group of items that are not housed permanently at a specific library, but instead belong to whichever library has most recently discharged them. The task force recommended that a pilot take place among four Penn State campus libraries. This poster session will discuss floating collection within a large academic library, the preparation for a pilot, and the outcomes.

Those Quirky QR Codes
QR Codes are useful in multiple applications within academic and public libraries. Real uses are displayed from pictures downloaded from Flickr. Other topics covered include why libraries should go mobile, why use QR codes, and tips for successful use of QR codes. Some beautiful, customized codes are displayed as well.
Program Sigma
Program Sigma is rolling out a series of repository services initiatives in 2012, one of which is development of a repository platform. The repository services platform project extends work done on the Curation Architecture Prototype Services (CAPS) to implement a reliable, scalable, and performant platform on which to develop curatorial, archival, and publishing applications. The focus will be on developing a web application for preservation management, search, and display of digital assets atop a publishing & curation platform ("repository"). Preservation and management services will be piloted by select University stakeholders during the project; search and display functions will be available as a new beta service to the University community and the general public. The project will create reusable infrastructure in support of our shared vision of providing a platform for the stewardship of the institution's digital assets. This project is the first production phase of an effort to build such a platform.
