9:15-10:15 AM Pennsylvania’s Sanborn Maps: A Unique Research Treasure Trove

The Donald W. Hamer Maps Library holds the most complete collection of Pennsylvania Sanborn Map Company fire insurance maps in the state. Explore these powerful multi-use maps with us as we describe an ongoing project to provide open access to the pre-1923 editions via CONTENTdm. We will describe the partnerships across units for scanning maps and creating metadata for preservation and access. You will learn the history of these maps and the many ways they can be used for research (from genealogical to architectural and much more), and future directions for the digital collection. A reprise of our previous presentation at last year's PaLA annual meeting at the Penn Stater.

Participants will spend a few moments one-on-one to "network" briefly, prompted by a series of engaging icebreakers, questions, and talking points to facilitate easy and meaningful interactions, then move on to the next person. This is social networking in real time!!!

You'll learn how this new site can help you and scholars with on-the-go research needs!

Promoting the Engineering Library through Viral Video

In order to encourage patrons of the Engineering Library to use the specialized databases available to them, the Engineering Library staff produced a short film intended to promote the use of these databases. The film will be shown during student seminars, and will also be posted on YouTube. During this session, we’ll be showing the film and talking about its development from original concept to final cut. This brief lightning talk will be of interest to those looking for ways to promote the Libraries' presence in ways that are both informative and engaging.

During this session, Penn State's Educational Gaming Commons, a group dedicated to the exploration of games for teaching and learning will share their experiences with EduGaming. We'll discuss some of the myths and opportunities of educational gaming, share ways we're exploring the medium, and even showcase several educational games we've built and the impact they've had in the classroom. We'll also discuss so called "gamification", or ways that games are influencing our everyday lives in significant and behavior changing ways. From the hardcore gamer to the hardcore skeptic, all are welcome!

The COO is made up of 17 local church and community organizations that share many of the same goals. Join us to learn more about the UNA and the COO and how you can become involved through the UNA and COO.
