Penn State Harrisburg's Office of Continuing Education is the designated testing site for Penn State students in the Harrisburg area who are taking online courses. In other words, Continuing Education is your first choice for finding a proctor, and the library is an additional option. Continuing Education generally offers proctoring Mondays through Fridays between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. To find out whether staff in Continuing Education can proctor your exam, contact the office at 717-948-6505.

The Penn State Harrisburg Library offers limited proctoring services, described below.

Eligibility

Any individual Penn State student who is taking a Penn State course may request a library proctor. If you are a course instructor who wishes to have a proctor for your entire class, you should work with your department or program's administrative assistant to find a room and appropriate personnel.

Fees

Library proctoring is a free service. There are no fees.

Hours

Mondays to Thursdays between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 4:00 p.m.

Scheduling

You must contact the library at least two weeks in advance of your test date. E-mail Bernadette Lear (bal19@psu.edu) or use the library's Ask a Question form. You must include your full name, the name of the course, the instructor's name, several dates and times you would be able to take the exam, and your contact information (e-mail and telephone). It is helpful to provide alternate dates in case we cannot accommodate your first choice. Mrs. Lear will consult the librarians' schedules and assign one to proctor your exam. The librarian-proctor will also contact you through e-mail to confirm your test date.

Facilities

We administer all exams in glassed-in study rooms near the reference desk on the first floor of the library. At this time, we only proctor written (pen and paper) exams and online exams that do not require us to install software or change the configuration of library computers. We will not read questions aloud, or help you interpret the meaning of questions.

On the Day of the Exam

You must bring positive photo ID, such as a driver's license. Also, you must bring sufficient paper. You should not bring a cell phone, PDA, iPod, or other communication devices. If you are allowed to use your textbook, notes, calculator, laptop, or other resources, your professor must indicate this in the test instructions. Otherwise, your proctor will assume that the exam is closed book.

Student Responsibilities

It is the student's responsibility to:

  • Contact Bernadette Lear (bal19@psu.edu) with specific dates and times you prefer to take your exam.
  • After Mrs. Lear assigns a proctor to you, work with the proctor to fill out any required forms, and submit the proctor's name for approval to your department or program (Penn State World Campus students must submit a Proctor Information Form).
  • Contact your proctor several days before the exam date to ensure that he or she has received your exam.
  • Show up on time to take your exam. If you fail to contact us about a scheduling problem and miss your exam (no call/no show), we are not obligated to reschedule your test.
  • Understand and follow the University's policies and procedures for exam proctoring. This includes academic integrity policies.

There may be other requirements, depending on your program. World Campus students should refer to policies on Taking an Exam and Securing a Proctor.

Proctor Responsibilities

In keeping with World Campus guidelines, only MLS-degreed librarians will proctor exams. We will make our best effort to:

  • Ensure the security and integrity of your test, particularly by watching out for signs of cheating. This will include at a minimum:
    • Receiving your test and keeping it in a safe place.
    • Checking your ID and paper or blue book on the date of the exam.
    • Filling out required paperwork.
    • Promptly communicating any problem with your test to you and your department or program.
    • Mailing your completed exam and relevant paperwork to your department or program on the same day that you complete the test.
  • Contact you as soon as possible to make other arrangements if your proctor cannot administer your test.
