Head Librarian, Penn State Hazleton Campus

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applicants for the position of Head Librarian at Penn State Hazleton. Penn State Hazleton is located on a wooded ridge in northeastern Pennsylvania overlooking the crossroads of Interstates 80 and 81. This is a tenure-track faculty position. The head librarian is a member of the University Libraries faculty and is responsible for overall library administration and services at the Hazleton campus library. The head librarian works closely with faculty in developing collections and providing innovative library instruction and services, participates in planning and development, supervises the library staff, and is expected to build effective and close involvement with students, faculty, the community, and the libraries at University Park and the other Penn State campus locations. In addition, librarians on the tenure track devote time to research and scholarly activity, and are active in service related to the University, the public, and the profession. The work environment in the University Libraries is both collaborative and very supportive.

REQUIREMENTS: Requires MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent), at least three years professional academic library experience with evidence of substantial reference and library instruction skills; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and a strong commitment to service. Second advanced degree desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Potential for promotion and tenure will be considered based upon University standards in librarianship, research, service, and outreach. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. ENVIRONMENT: Penn State Hazleton has approximately 1200 students; with 500 living on campus. The campus is about 45 minutes from Scranton, roughly 2 hours from Philadelphia, and just over 2 hours from New York City. The campus offers 4 Bachelor’s degrees, 8 associate degree programs, and the first 2 years of over 160 Penn State baccalaureate programs. The campus also offers a wide variety of continuing education programs, and has close ties to the community it serves. The 80,000 volume campus library is a gateway to the resources of the Penn State University Libraries system whose collection exceeds 5.2 million volumes, 69,000 serials, 517 databases, and more than 50,000 e-books.
