Spring Semester 2012

Spring Library Instruction Classes

To schedule a library instruction session for your students, contact your subject librarian to make arrangements. Librarians can introduce your students to basic resources or conduct a session on finding information on specialized topics. Consult a librarian when creating a library related assignment. Librarians can assist by recommending databases and resources, checking the accuracy of physical locations in the library, and checking that the resources are accessible to the students.

Searching for Unique Donations

The University Libraries have extensive collections in all subjects, but occasionally unique items with Penn State significance are missed during our collecting efforts. Two such items were donated this semester, a conference proceedings that was held at Penn state in the 1980s and a book, Great Rivers Great Hatches, couthored by Greg Hoover in the Entomology Department. If you have a moment, look around your office for unique resources that the library might need. Contact your subject specialist to arrange for a donation.

'Proxy Service' Enables RAs to Check Out Books

Can't find time for a trip to the Library? Faculty members can now authorize research assistants to check out their books and media, including holds and interlibrary loans, under a new service offered by the University Libraries. Under the "Library Proxy Service", a research assistant will be issued a prozy card that includes a machine-readable barcode that corresponds to his or her faculty member's account.

To apply, the faculty member and designated research assistant must sign an authorization form and submit it to the Commons Services Desk on the first floor of Pattee Library, during standard operating hours. The Library Proxy Service cards will expire on August 31st. To continue the service after this date, a new form must be submitted.

For more information, call the Commons Services Desk at 814-865-5429, or e-mail UL-Lending@Lists.psu.edu.

Knowledge Commons is Open

The new Knowledge Commons in Pattee Library is a student-centered space offering a wide-range of services in an environment designed to facilitate information discovery, collaborative learning, and knowledge building. It blends digital and multimedia technologies with the best of online and traditional library services to foster student learning and research.

Knowledge Commons focuses on undergraduate students, please remember that librarians with expertise in life sciences subjects are located on the 4th floor of Paterno Library. Feel free to contact us by email, IM, phone or in person.

Grad Student Document Delivery Trial

During Spring Semester 2012, the Libraries will extend to graduate students its article delivery service currently offered to faculty and staff. The trial will be from January 9, 2012 through May 4, 2012.

Articles from print journals and proceedings in PSU Libraries will be delivered electronically using ILLIAD Book chapters or copies from microfiche are not provided.

Most articles will be supplied within 3 to 5 business days. If an article is needed immediately, it is best to go and copy it. Large numbers of requests from a single user may be processed over several days.
