Please Put your Textbooks on Reserve

As I am writing this, another large tuition increase will be sent out today. What does this have to do with the Life Sciences Library? The increase may be equivalent to many students' book budgets for the year. This means that many students will be looking for their textbooks from the Libraries this fall. If at all possible, please put your textbook on reserve. Click here to learn how to put books and articles on reserve. If need be, we can buy one copy of the text for the Reserve Room. We always recommend that students buy the textbook, but with the difficult economic times we realize that some students may not be able to afford expensive texts. If you have a questions, please feel free to contact us.

Schedule your Fall Classes

Now is the time to request fall courses, while there is still space in the library instruction rooms. Contact your librarian to make arrangements.

Open House Dates

Tuesday, September 16 - Wednesday, September 17  10:00am to 6:00pm

The Open House is an event especially for new students that provides an introduction to the resources and facilities of the University Libraries. The activity takes about an hour and allows students to visit many areas of the Libraries.

In the Life Sciences Library the students "hike" the nature trail and stop at the stations for the Reference Desk, the Stacks, the Current Journals area, Electronic Resources and the Reference Collection. Over 2000 students visited the Life Sciences Library during the 2008 Open House. So please understand if the Library is a bit noisy and hectic those days.

Scopus

The University Libraries were granted a trial access to Elsevier's Scopus database which runs through the middle of August. Access is limited to Penn State folks on campus, or accessing resources through the VPN. The Scopus database is a direct competitor to ISI's Web of Science and the Libraries will only be able to afford one of these databases. Tell us which database you prefer by sending a note to any of the subject specialists.

Library Contacts

Responsibility for instruction, reference assistance, and the selection of books and other materials for the Life Sciences Library is divided by broad subject areas. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to request assistance or to recommend new titles for purchase. Please contact the appropriate subject specialist.

The Campus mail address for all these individuals is 408 Paterno Library.
