Research Assistance

The Campus Library has a dedicated and knowledgeable staff to help students and faculty find material for their projects and research.  We will lend assistance in using the library collection and article Databases.  Stop by the Information Desk any time to ask a question.  For more in depth assistance, schedule an appointment with a librarian who can offer suggestions for approaching your project.  Call 749-6041 or email tlr15@psu.edu to set up a time to meet with a librarian.

Reference Collection

The Campus Library maintains a general reference collection to support the curricula of the campus.  Included in the collection are general and specialized encyclopedias, statistical resources, dictionaries, almanacs, atlases, handbooks and indexes.

Search for Books

The online catalog , or The CAT, is the system used to locate books and other materials owned by the university libraries. Items not at Mont Alto may be requested from other Penn State locations. The library catalog can be accessed from any computer with Internet access and searches a collection of nearly 5 million items.

Research Databases

Penn State Libraries subscribe to many computerized periodical databases that are available to students, faculty and staff.

Links to these databases can be found here.  Databases by Subject
Specialized database indexes covering periodicals in the many fields including: agriculture, architecture, business, education, engineering, history, math, medicine, psychology and sociology, are available.

ProQUEST DIRECT is a multidisciplinary database, which provides citations and abstracts of articles from over 5000 periodical publication and the full text of many articles.

Interlibrary Loan

Penn State Mont Alto Library students, faculty, and staff have access to all Penn State Library items, as well as materials at other libraries through ILLiad, the University Libraries' interlibrary loan system.

Course Reserves

Reserve items faculty select for specific classes are shelved at the Circulation desk.  Most items are loaned for 2 hours to be used within the Library.

Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves) are photocopied materials available through The CAT, and can be accessed 24 hours a day from any computer with Internet Access.

For more information about Course Reserves, call the library at  717-749-6040

Newspapers & Periodicals

The library subscribes to the Wall Street Journal, Patriot News, Washington Post, as well as local community newspapers (Chambersburg, Waynesboro,  Hagerstown).  Some newspapers are available full-text on-line.

The library maintains subscriptions and back files for approximately 150 magazines and journals.  Articles from periodicals not owned on campus are often available full-text  through one of our many databases.

Check the E-Journal List for specific titles.

ILLiad can be used to request copies of articles not available at the Mont Alto Library.

Photocopies & Transparencies

The Campus Library has a coin operated Xerox for making copies 8 1/2 x 11, or 8 1/2 x 14 . Cost for either size is $.10.

Transparencies are available in the Library for $.35 each.  If you wish to run the transparency through the Library's photocopier, you must purchase the transparency at the Library.  This policy is to guard against expensive damage to the copier caused by inferior transparencies melting in the copier.

Study Space

There are 2 areas suitable for meetings or group study and 6 small private study rooms, in addition to the study tables and carrels found throughout the building.

Computers

The library has computers for library research and general use.   A scanner and color printer are also available.

Wireless Internet access is available in and around the library.  You may use your laptop, or borrow one of ours.  Laptop computers can be checked out for up to 3 days.

A Penn State user ID is required to access the Internet.  Public Internet access is not available.

Computers are available for members of the community without a PSU ID who would like to search the library catalog or access available research databases
