Help With Your Research

We can help with your professional research as well as provide you with individualized instruction on using any of our databases, services and resources. Just e-mail aer123@psu.edu or call 724-334-6072 and let us know what you need.

Interlibrary Loan

Although we are a physically small library, we can obtain nearly anything for you because of our vast interlibrary loan network. To get a copy of a specific article you already have the citation for, start with Citation Linker, a piece of software that will determine if we have access to an online version of that article through the Penn State Library system. If so, you will be given a link to it; if not, click on "Consider Interlibrary Loan." This will take you into ILLIAD, a self-service document delivery system, where you can type in your article request. Within a few days you will get an email from the interlibrary loan office saying that the article is now available. Log back in to ILLIAD and you will find the article in pdf form, mounted in your ILLIAD space.

To request books from other libraries in the Penn State system, use the "I Want It" button in the CAT. To request books from outside the Penn State system, use the ILL button in Worldcat, located under W on the Databases tab. You have to be registered in ILLIAD before you can do this.

Having trouble? Send me an email (jrg15@psu.edu) and I will work my magic...

Research Instruction for Your Students

We offer instruction sessions by faculty request to help your students do the research required for their assignments and take full advantage of the resources available to them as Penn State students. All classes are tailored according to the individual class needs, but examples of topics covered are as follows:

  • How to use LionSearch to find books and articles
  • How to find books in the CAT and how to order books from other campuses
  • How to find articles in Academic Search Complete (a general topic, full-text database)
  • How to use a discipline specific database (e.g. Social Science Abstracts, Biological Abstracts)
  • How to evaluate information found on the web
  • How to cite your sources

Instruction sessions are generally held in one of the computer labs on campus. This process works most effectively when the students have a specific assignment that they need to do research for, and the librarian has a copy of that assignment ahead of time. To schedule a session, please contact Jennifer Gilley at jrg15@psu.edu or (724) 334-6076.

Course Reserves

You can put material on reserve for your students, both physically in the library and electronically through Penn State University Library's electronic reserve system.  Contact Yesenia Figueroa at yuf3@psu.edu with your reserve requests.

Suggest Books/Movies/Music for the Collection

We need your help! No one knows better than you do what materials your students might need to support their coursework. Please let us know of any books or other materials you think the library should buy to support instruction in your field. We're also happy to buy materials that are of personal interest as well, within reason.

Plagiarism: A Resource Guide for Faculty

Join the Wall of Fame

Published something recently? Won an award? Got tenure or a promotion? Please let us know. We have a Faculty Publications Page on our website and an exhibit case in the main hallway where we display copies of recent articles or other materials published by our faculty, and celebrate other faculty achievements. It lets students and others know what we're up to.
