July 1: Historical Bellefonte newspapers digitized
The Libraries' Pennsylvania Civil War Era Collection, a digital resource of newspapers published before, during and after the U.S. Civil War, received a boost recently with the addition of three local titles. "Central Press" (Bellefonte), the "Bellefonte Republican" and the "Bellefonte National" can now be accessed from the site. Go to: http://digitalnewspapers.libraries.psu.edu/Default/welcome.asp?skin=civilwar&QS=skin%3Dcivilwar Select the "browse archive" option in the menu on the left side of the screen to view exact holdings for each title. The "advanced search" feature allows users to search for specific words or phrases, publications and dates.
Newspapers played a prominent role during the Civil War, mobilizing public opinion, documenting political life and relaying battlefield developments to readers. The Pennsylvania Civil War Era Collection contains all the text, photographs and advertisements from selected Pennsylvania newspapers published between February 23, 1831 and February 14, 1877, and is a valuable resource for researchers and casual readers alike.
