book cover of Ice Cream UIn Ice Cream U, Stout concentrates on one of Penn State's most popular destinations as well as the nation's oldest and most successful creamery. Librarian Emeritus Stout, who spent twenty-seven years as Penn State University Archivist, adds his intimate knowledge of Penn State history to a wealth of old and new photos to produce a visually spectacular and interesting book. He tells the story of the Creamery's modest beginning, the growth of State College and the campus, to its current status as an internationally respected center for education and research—and of course provider of delicious ice cream.

The book was made possible through the generosity of Eleanor Judy Smith, Penn State '59 and the late Ronald W. Smith, Penn State '58. Mrs. Smith is the granddaughter of Creamery Superintendent Frank Knoll, who played a significant role in the development of the Creamery from 1904–1944.
