November 2: Presentation by global cultural affairs scholar


Binghamton University Director of the Institute of Global Cultural Studies Professor Ali Mazrui will present  “Obama Between Africanity and the Muslim World,” on Monday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library. The event will be followed by a reception in Mann Assembly Room, 101 Pattee Library. This presentation is sponsored by the African and African American Studies Department as part of its distinguished guest lecture series.

Mazrui, a noted writer, speaker and academic, is the Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities and professor of Political Science, African Studies and Philosophy, Interpretation and Culture. He is also Andrew D. White Professor-at-Large Emeritus and Senior Scholar in Africana Studies at Cornell University. In 2005 the journal "Foreign Policy" and the British magazine "Prospect" nominated Mazrui to the list of "top 100 public intellectuals alive." His more than thirty books include "Towards a Pax Africana," "Islam Between Globalization and Counterterrorism" and "The Politics of War and the Culture of Violence."

Mazrui's television work includes the 1986 series "The Africans: A Triple Heritage," (BBC and PBS). He is widely consulted on many issues including constitutional change and educational reform. In addition, Mazrui has been involved in a number of UN projects on matters ranging from human rights to nuclear proliferation and is also internationally consulted on Islamic culture and Muslim history.
