Services and Fees

The News & Microforms Library faculty and staff provide reference assistance for all collections housed in the News & Microforms Library as well as assistance with all of the different types of equipment available to view, print, and scan microformats. Assistance is also provided to researchers not having a Penn State Access Account*.

*Information for Researchers who do not have a Penn State Access Account

Please check the current library hours and the directions to the library before visiting.

Researchers who do not have a Penn State Access Account are welcome to visit the News & Microforms Library and use our collections and the microfilm and microfiche readers and reader/printers.

Researchers may obtain a LionCash+ card in order to print. A LionCash+ vending machine is located outside the News & Microforms Library. The cards cost $1.00. Money can be added for printing. Copies are $0.16/page.

Researchers who would like to use any of the scanning equipment available in the News & Microforms Library will need to request a Short Term Access Account at the Reference Desk.

Short Term Access Account for Research (STAAR):
  • good for limited time
  • a current, valid photo ID is required
  • allows access to library computers but not network printing

  • Scan microformat materials and save the images in a variety of ways:
    • U: drive or PASS (Penn State Access Account Storage Space)
    • jump drive
    • floppy disk
    • CD-ROM
  • Additional lens available for magnification; ask at the reference desk
  • Print 8.5 x 11 using LionCash+ card ($0.16) from designated scanner
  • To print 11 x 17 using LionCash+  card ($0.16) from the designated scanner, ask at the reference desk for assistance

  • Black & white ($.05 per page, single or double-sided)
