In the December newsletter, I reported that AAAS had decided to stop adding backfiles of Science to the JSTOR database. I’m happy to announce that AAAS has changed its mind and will once again be contributing backfiles to JSTOR. However, AAAS hasn’t changed its mind about having the newer content available through PROQUEST; nor have they come up with a better price offer for e-access to all of Penn State.

Through the CIC, the University Libraries has signed a license with Springer to provide electronic access to Springer books published since 2005. At the present time, the best way to access these titles is to go to the SpringerLink website at http://alias.libraries.psu.edu/ERESOURCES/PSU00766 and search for the desired title. Cataloging data will be added to The CAT as soon as the CIC members agree on the proper format for the records.
Imprints that are included in this license are Apress, Birkhauser, Copernicus Books, Humana, Physica-Verlag, Plenum US, Praxis, Springer, Springer-Verlag, Steinkopff, and TELOS.
However, there are some titles published under these imprints that aren’t part of the package. These include all German language publications, International Tables for Crystallography, book series Landolt Bornstein, and Methods titles (Methods in Molecular Biology, Molecular Medicine, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology).
Also, there are some imprints distributed by Springer that are not included. These include Intercept, Lavoisier, Royal Society of Chemistry, BIOS Scientific Publishers, Horizon Press, GWV-Vieweg, Key College Publishing, Key Curriculum Press, American Institute of Physics (AIP), avedition, August Media, Lars Müller, Princeton Architectural Press, Urban & Vogel, Pyramyd, Bladon Medical Publishing, Nexus, Edizioni della Normale, Cornell AAP Publications, and Spektrum Akademischer Verlag.

I am on sabbatical (beginning in February.) In my absence, John Meier will be the acting Head of the PAMS Library. He’ll also be temporarily taking over responsibility for library services in chemistry, physics, and astronomy. We’ll all be back to normal in August when I return.

We’re in the process of finalizing arrangements to get SPSS installed on some of the workstations in our library instruction lab. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
We’ve also submitted a request to our tech people to get CHEMDRAW installed on the public workstations in the library. We’ve had a lot of requests for this software, so we’re hoping that we’ll be able to make this available soon.

Want to help the environment? Recycle your spent Inkjet cartridges. We have a drop-off box in the PAMS Library on the table next to the photocopiers. (That’s the one with the suggestion box, hole punch, stapler, etc.) Drop them in the bin, and we’ll send them off for recycling. Sorry, we can’t take laser printer, photocopier toner cartridges, or cell phones.

Nearly 140,000 people visited the PAMS Library in 2007. That’s over 35,000 more than in 2006.
