Online access to the International Tables for Crystallography, the definitive resource and reference work for crystallography, which Penn State Libraries purchased earlier this year is now fully available. The series comprises articles and tables of data relevant to crystallographic research and to applications of crystallographic methods in all sciences concerned with the structure and properties of materials. Emphasis is given to symmetry, diffraction methods and techniques of crystal structure determination, and the physical and chemical properties of crystals.

The libraries recently have experienced a rash of database abuses, causing us to lose access to a number of products, from individual journal titles to entire databases. The abuse has ranged from large numbers of manual downloads to the use of a robot to systematically download over 200,000 items.
Penn State's access to electronic content is jeopardized every time this activity occurs. Up until now information providers have been very cooperative, working with us to track the abuse and restoring access in a timely fashion. There may come the time, however, when a user may so severely breach our agreement that the information provider could choose to shut us down permanently.
This activity is a violation of our license agreements with all of our information providers. Even though Penn State licenses access to the content, no member of this community is permitted to actually download substantial portions of any product--there are no exceptions.

In response to great demand from our users and with support from library technology funds, PAMS has acquired four licenses for SPSS, SAS, and Minitab computer programs. We also have eight licenses for the full Matlab suite including software libraries. This summer during regular software updates, four computers in PAMS Instruction Lab will be enhanced with all of these software packages. Signs will indicate the new features and those wishing to use these programs will have priority for access to these computers. The remaining four Matlab computers will temporarily be assigned in the Instruction Lab with a plan to keep them together for group work.
