Intergovernmental Organizations

  • United Nations
    A central mandate of the UN is the promotion of higher standards of living, full employment, and conditions of economic and social progress and development. As much as 70 per cent of the work of the UN system is devoted to accomplishing this mandate. The Social Sciences Library at Penn State has a large collection of United Nations materials relating to all of its activities. These are available on the 2nd Floor Paterno Library.

  • Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)
    Thirty member countries produce two-thirds of the world's goods and services. This organization exists to foster prosperity and fight poverty through economic growth, financial stability, trade and investment, technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and development co-operation.

  • International Labor Organization (ILO) (UN specialized agency)
    The ILO creates international labor standards, provides technical cooperation services, and publishes its own research on social and labor matters in order to promote decent living standards, satisfactory conditions of work and pay, and adequate employment opportunities.

  • International Monetary Fund (IMF) (UN specialized agency)
    The IMF is an international organization of 183 member countries, established to promote international monetary cooperation, exchange stability, and orderly exchange arrangements; to foster economic growth and high levels of employment; and to provide temporary financial assistance to countries to help ease balance of payments adjustment.

  • The World Bank Group (UN specialized agency)
    The World Bank is the world's largest source of development assistance, providing nearly $16 billion in loans annually to its client countries. It uses its resources to help each developing country onto a path of stable, sustainable, and equitable growth in the fight against poverty. Search the Development Gateway for country portals and for World Bank projects by topic or location. Also search the World Bank e-Library for access to World Bank publications and Policy Research Working Papers.

Country Information

  • The World Factbook

  • Country Information (International Monetary Fund)
    Provides news and data for about 180 countries. This service includes links to central banks, economic indicators, and member financial data with respect to credits or debits with the fund, and summaries of disbursements and repayments.

  • Regions and Countries (World Bank Group)
    For each of more than 100 developing countries, the World Bank provides a brief that summarizes the history, economy, development outlook, role of the Bank, and current projects. It also provides summary statistics and direct links to World Bank publications that address issues in each country.

  • Country Studies (Library of Congress)
    Online versions of books previously published in hard copy under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Army. This series focuses on lesser-known countries and regions of the world. Although some handbooks are somewhat dated, they each present a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world.

 

Statistical and Financial Information

  • International Financial Statistics (IFS) Online
    IFS Online is the principal statistical publications of the International Monetary Fund. Tables for each Fund member country include data on the country's exchange rates, Fund position, international liquidity, money and banking accounts, interest rates, prices, production, international transactions, government accounts, national accounts and population. Selected series are published in area and world tables. Data may be downloaded as HTML, MS Excel, comma-delimited, or tab-delimited files. Some series begin with 1945. Updated monthly.

  • International Statistical Agencies (U.S. Census Bureau)

    National Statistical Offices (United Nations)
    Links to national statistical offices worldwide, arranged by region. Most data is offered in the official languages of each nation, with English occasionally given as an alternative language.

  • World Development Indicators
    World Development Indicators includes nearly 800 statistical indicators related to social and economic development. It is organized into six sections: World View, People, Environment, Economy, States and Markets, and Global Links. The tables cover 152 economies and 14 country groups — with basic indicators for a further 55 economies. Data can be downloaded for further manipulation.

 

International Policy and Analysis Resources

  • CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online)
    CIAO is one of the most comprehensive sources for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 on that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, and proceedings from conferences.

  • PolicyFile (Public Policy Research and Analysis)
    Data from world-renowned public policy think tanks including the American Enterprise Institute, Brookings Institution, Cato Institute, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Economic Strategy Institute, Heritage Foundation, Hoover Institute, Hudson Institute, International Monetary Fund, RAND Corporation, Urban Institute and the World Bank; university research programs and publishers.

  • Political Risk Yearbook Online
    Provides Country Reports on 106 countries-each offering accurate political and economic risk analysis. Each Country Report focuses specifically on vital political and business information: finding developing markets, determining currency movements, preparing for capital investments, or making judgments about corporate security.
