Release Date

Because film reviews appear in so many different types of publications, there is generally no single, authoritative strategy for locating them. Online coverage of newspapers and magazines, as well as scholarly periodicals, decreases as one goes back in time. Also, with the exception of the New York Times and the Times of London, newspapers only began publishing indexes in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In the course of your search you will probably have to consult a number of different resources in order to compile a comprehensive list of reviews.

These links are broken down by release date because of the varying film review coverage of particular resources and the varying reliability and extensiveness of electronic resources for film reviews.

Films released before 1986

The texts of older reviews will generally be unavailable online, with the notable exception of the New York Times Historical, which provides digital page images of every issue of the New York Times from 1851 to 2003.Films of the mid-1980s to mid-1990s

Films from the mid-1990s to the present

For films released since the 1990s you can search the Internet sites:

Note: Not all sites offer free online public access to their archives.

For older films, search The CAT for print copies of the publication in which the review appears. The newspapers or magazines may be on microfilm or microfiche. Check with staff in the News and Microforms Library or your campus library if you need assistance. Many film reviews, particularly recent ones, are available online.  If you have a specific citation or know the title of publication in which the review appears, use citation linker.
