Books and More

Books and Encyclopedias

For works on the mining of specific minerals, try the search formula:

[mineral type] mines and mining (example: coal mines and mining)

SME Mining Engineering Handbook. This two-volume handbook provides basic data and information for mining engineers.

Background information about mineral resources can be found in books and encyclopedias such as:

Journals

Search Ulrich's Web for a list of currently published mining journals

Journal Citation Reports provides impact factors for major mining journals

Transactions of the AIME. (See the CAT record) The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers is an umbrella organization for several societies including the Society of Mining Engineers, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and others. The contents and contributions to the transactions series has changed over the years. For many years, even volumes contained papers from the Society of Mining Engineers; odd volumes held Society of Petroleum Engineers papers. Each volume contains selected papers from SME/SPE journals or conference proceedings. One confusing aspect of the Transactions is that the pagination was retained from the original place these articles appeared, leading to cases of duplicate page numbers. Without the table of contents, a user is lost. Use OneMine to locate specific papers.

Statistics

  • Minerals Information (U.S. Geological Survey)
    • The USGS collects production and other data for non-energy minerals worldwide. Data is available by commodity or by location and is compiled annually or more frequently.
    • Commodity Statistics and Information (1994 to date)
    • Minerals Yearbook (for commodity data 1932-1993)
    • Previous years data (1882-1931) are available in Mineral Resources of the United States (Find this book!)
  • Mining Fact Sheets are produced by NIOSH with statistics for various types of mining.
  • The U.S. Economic Censuses also contains production and other data for mining.
  • Minerals and Mining Statistics Division, Natural Resources Canada
  • Commodity Yearbook 2003 – published by the United Nations, this contains multi-year information on quantity and value of 10 minerals - aluminum, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, phosphate, sulphur, tin, and zinc.
