Quick Start Guide: NBC Learn

 

Find and View Videos

There are several options for finding videos.

  • To browse for videos by topic, select an option of All Courses in the left menu which lists different disciplines.
  • To search for videos, you enter keywords into the Search the Archives textbox in the upper left.
  • To use advanced search (including narrowing date parameters), click the Advanced Search link above the left menu.
  • Click thumbnail icons to open a video; videos will play automatically.
    Note: Videos can be turned off and on by pressing the space bar.

Features of the Video Player

Click a link to any video thumbnail to play the video in a custom NBC Learn Cue Card video player. The player includes features for full screen view, closed caption and viewing transcript. It also features tools for saving videos into playlists, sharing URLs, viewing metadata and downloading video to play without an Internet connection.  See image below for location of tools in the Cue Card player and read the description below for details.

Access Full Screen Mode

To enter full screen mode, move your mouse over the the bottom of the video to view the play controls. Click the rectangle icon to the far right to enter full screen mode. Press the Escape button to exit full-screen display.

 

Mute Video and Control Volume

  1. To disable audio, move your mouse over the the bottom of the video to view the play controls, then click the speaker icon. To un-mute, click the speaker icon again.
  2. Click the bars in the play controls to change the volume of the video.

View Closed Captions and Transcripts
  1. To activate closed captions, move your mouse over the the bottom of the video to view the play controls. Click the CC icon to the far right to display captions (this action turns on captions for all videos).
  2. To hide captions, click the CC icon again.
  3. To view a transcript, click Transcript in the right side of the player. A transcript tab opens. To close the transcript, click Transcript again. The transcript can be used to verify spelling and specific facts.

Note: Not all video files may have captions or transcripts.

 
Access Metadata and Copy Bibliographic Citation
  1. To access metadata about the video (including air date, keywords and bibliographic citation), click the curved arrow button on the upper right of the Cue Card. Click the arrow icon again to retutn to the video.
  2. To access and copy a bibliographic citation for a video.
    1. Click curved arrow button to view the metadata.
    2. Click the + button next to Citation.
    3. Select citation style from MLA, APA or Chicago Manual of Style.
    4. Click the Copy button on the lower left. Text can then be pasted in another document.

Save Video to a Playlist

To save a video to a Playlist folder, click the Save button at the bottom. See the Create and Use Playlists section below for additional details.

Find Video URL or Post/E-mail Link

The Share tool on the Cue Card player allows users to both discover the direct URL and to send it to different online sources.

  1. Click the Share link to open the palette. The URL is available at the bottom. You can click the Copy URL to copy the URL which can be pasted into another document.
  2. To e-mail link, click the Email icon. The tool also includes options for posting the URL to Delicious, Digg, Twitter, Facebook, AIM and other outlets.
  3. Click Copy URL to close the palette.

Add Notes to a Video
  1. Save the video to a playlist.
  2. To save notes about a video, click the Notes button.
  3. Enter and format text, then click Save.
 
Download Video

NBC Learn allows you to download videos to a local computer so it can be played without an Internet connection.

  1. To download a video, click the Download button beneath an open video. First time downloaders will be prompted to install a custom applications. Once the application is installed, click the Download button to continue the process.
  2. To play video, open the NBC Learn Offline Player application. Click the Library tab on the left to view list of all downloaded videos. The player also includes options for playlists and import/export.

Create and Use Playlists

Playlists are a way of organizing videos into folders of related videos.

  • To start a playlist
    • Open a video relating to a potential playlist topic. Click the Save button at the bottom to open the Save to Playlist pallette.
    • Click the option for New, then fill in New Playlist Name field, then click Save.
      Note: Hitting the space bar may trigger the video off and on.
  • To save a video to an existing playlist
    • Open a video relating to a potential playlist topic. Click the Save button at the bottom to open the Save to Playlist pallette.
    • Click the option for Existing and check an appropriate playlist title.
      Note: Videos can be saved to multiple playlists.
  • To view playlists
    • Click the MyPlaylists tab to view saved videos.
    • Click the links in the left menu to view videos by playlist folder.
  • To discover a URL for a playlist
    • Click the MyPlaylists tab to view playlists, then select a particular playlist in the left menu.
    • Click the envelope icon within the Share area in the far right.
    • Enter your email address in both the To field and the From field, then click Send. The URL will be e-mailed to you.

Technical Requirements

  • Windows and Macintosh supported for recent operating systems
  • Modern versions of Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari are supported
  • NBC Learn plays Flash Video (.flv) files.
  • Cookies should be enabled for this Web site.
  • A High Bandwidth connection is recommended.
