Forms of Statutory Law

Federal laws are published in two forms:

  • The United States Statutes at Large (STAT)
The text of each federal law, in the exact language enacted by Congress, in chronological order.

  • The United States Code (USC)
A codification of federal statutes, rearranged by:

    • integrating each original law with its amendments
    • presenting all subdivisions of existing federal statutes in topical order
    • eliminating all repealed, superceded, or expired laws

Note: [Penn State Libraries] indicates a Libraries' resource available to researchers with a Penn State Access Account.
