Use a Public Scanner

The Reserve Reading Room provides two Epson GT-15000 scanners with a maximum scanning area of 11.7" x 17" for public use. Smaller Epson scanners are also available in the ITS computer lab. The following instructions were written for the larger scanners, but are likely applicable to both.

Should I Use Acrobat or Photoshop?

Use Adobe Acrobat if:

  • you're scanning a multi-page document.
  • you need good but not great image quality
  • the file size of the finished product is a concern.

Use Adobe Photoshop if:

  • you want a very high-quality reproduction of a photograph.
  • you want to enlarge the image.
  • you want to edit or manipulate the image extensively.
Getting Started in Adobe Acrobat
  1. After logging in to the workstation, go to StartAll ProgramsElectronic PublishingAdobe Acrobat 8.0Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional.
  2. On the left end of the Acrobat toolbar, click on Create PDFFrom Scanner.
  3. Select EPSON GT-15000 (not the one that begins with WIA) from the drop-down list next to "Scanner" at the top of the Acrobat Scan window.
  4. The Color Mode and Resolution options should be inactive at this point. If they are not, click on Scanner Options, select Show Scanner's Native Interface from the drop-down list next to "User Interface" and click OK.
  5. Move the Optimization slider between Small Size and High Quality as desired.
  6. Check the box next to Make Searchable (Run OCR) if you want Acrobat to try to translate the scanned image into editable text. Note: this will increase the file size significantly.
  7. Click on Scan.
  8. Follow the instructions on using the Epson scanner interface below.
  9. After scanning, Acrobat will ask you if you are done. If you want to scan another page using the same settings, place that page on the scanning surface, select Scan more pages, and click OK. Otherwise, select Scanning complete and click OK.

Using the Epson Scanner Interface

Note: the Epson scanner interface offers the user three "modes" — Home, Office, and Professional. The following instructions were written using the Home mode. The Office mode does not seem to offer any more options than the Home mode. And the Professional mode is for users who are well-acquainted with image editing and/or graphic design.

  1. In the EPSON Scan window, use the Document Type, Image Type, and Destination options to adjust the quality of the scan.

Image types — Color is self-explanatory. Grayscale allows for many shades of gray between black and white. Black & White converts every pixel of color or gray shade into either pure white or pure black, depending on how light or dark it is.

    Recommended settings:

    • For all-text pages — Black & White at 300 dpi.
    • For pages with images — Grayscale (or Color if desired) at 200 dpi.
    • For high-quality photographic images or images that you want to enlarge — 600 dpi (use Photoshop).

Note: To set the resolution manually, select Other from the Destination options and select a value from the drop-down list next to "Resolution."

  2. Click on Brightness if you want to adjust the brightness and/or contrast of the scan.
  3. Click on Preview.
  4. After the preview scan is done, switch to the Preview window (don't close the original scanner window).
  5. Use the buttons under Frame to rotate and/or flip the image if desired.
  6. To select the scanning area, draw a box around that area of the image that you want to scan. Note: if the page on the scanner moves, you will need to do another preview scan and redraw the selection box.
  7. Once you are satisfied with the preview scan, switch back to the original scanner window and click on Scan.
