Built and dedicated in 1970, the Library at Penn State Worthington Scranton provides physical access to over 75,000 books, reference materials, microforms, periodicals and maps. In addition, Penn State University Libraries' integrated system provides 24/7 electronic access to over 500 databases and an online catalog (The CAT) that includes over 5 million items, including electronic books.
Penn State Worthington Scranton's collection strengths include the support of these academic programs: American Studies, Business, Human Development and Family Studies, Information Science, Nursing, Adult Organizational Leadership and Building Engineering Technology. Additional collection strengths include democracy studies and etymology. The André Prévos Collection, gifted to the Library in 2002, is noteworthy for materials in jazz, Blues, folklore, rap & hip-hop, and Black literature. In addition, the Library archives local regional history, with Northeastern Pennsylvania authors and anthracite coal resources well-represented.
Reference services are provided in personal consultation with library faculty, as well as through the Virtual Reference Service (VRS). Service delivery is available through interlibrary loan, the ASK! link, e-mail, and desktop delivery. Printing is free in the Library. Extensive library instruction and information literacy programming is customized for students and faculty each semester.
