Interinstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge (ICIK) Showcase of Penn State experiences

Friday, October 5, 2012, our University community is sponsoring an Interinstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge (ICIK) Showcase of Penn State experiences in the Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library. This gathering, tentatively scheduled from 9am-3pm, has garnered a vast array of individuals to help share the importance of Indigenous Knowledge scholarship which included the following:

  • a panel consisting of undergraduate Kyle Snyder, graduate student David Ader, as well as Dr. Jotsna Kalavar, Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, PSU New Kensington sharing their interests in and academic involvements with Indigenous Knowledge.

  • Keynote Address: The Importance of Indigenous Knowledge to the Academy by Dr. Eva Pell, Under Secretary for Science at the Smithsonian (and formerly, Penn State Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School).

  • Panel discussion by PSU administrators: The Indigenous Knowledge Environment at Penn State

    • Dr. Michael Adewumi, Vice Provost for Global Programs
    • Barbara Dewey, Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications
    • Dr. David Monk, Dean, College of Education
    • Dr. Bruce McPheron, Dean, College of Agricultural Sciences, and
    • Dr. Ronald Redwing, Assoc. Dean for Educational Equity, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences

We have asked these Deans to discuss the unique features of the Indigenous Knowledge environment in their respective PSU programs, the interdisciplinary nature of indigenous knowledge, the importance of collaboration, how faculty, staff and students at PSU can be encouraged to incorporate indigenous knowledge concepts into research, teaching and outreach, and (where appropriate) the possibility of creating an Indigenous Knowledge Global Engagement Network (GEN) at Penn State.

  • A light luncheon in Mann Assembly Room accompanied by screening of the AcademIK Connections videos and introduction of featured individuals in attendance including: Khanjan Mehta, Ladi Semali, Clemente Abrokwaa, Carolyn Sachs, Audrey Maretzki, Madu Prakash, Duarte Morais, Bruce Martin,Ted Alter, Michael Jacobson, Fran Osseo-Asare, Mary Marete, David Ader, Lindsay Usher, and Mary Chandy Vayaliparampil.

  • The afternoon will conclude with examples on the use of new media technology to promote Indigenous Knowledge and sharing information of funds available from the M.G. Whiting Endowment for the Advancement of Indigenous Knowledge at Penn State.

We would truly hope that the administrative leadership at all of our Commonwealth campuses could alert individuals within their respective campus communities about this Indigenous Knowledge Showcase and, to whatever means possible, encourage them to attend and participate in the dialogue.
