Try These Marketing Ideas...Examples of Best Practices

 

Collections

  • Create an exhibition and promotional materials to advertise it
  • Publicize new materials
    • Newly-arrived book shelf
    • New book jackets display in heavily trafficked areas
  • Each week, profile a different database: "It's your time; use it wisely."
  • Collaborate with faculty

    • Invite faculty to speak on specific topic.
    • Host faculty author receptions and faculty art exhibits open to the community
    • "Author's Corner" displays works by local authors/faculty
  • Use collection in an instruction session in related courses.

Library Identity

  • T-shirts, calendars, scarfs, thin magnets, squishy brains, highlighters, etc. using PSU graphics sources. Talk to PRAM about how to order.
  • Advertise these items with Library theme online (and sell online when safe server is available).
  • Print attractive thin magnets that promote products, or cool images.
  • Include "Brought to you by University Libraries" on copyright screen for Libraries electronic resources.

Services

  • Have students develop a marketing plan for the library, with the audience primarily being undergraduates.
  • Provide outreach to local schools.
  • Promote Ask!
  • Provide a weekly podcast on what is new in the library.
  • Make library resources more transparent, remove layers of web pages obscuring access.
  • Focus efforts on helping patrons, rather than purely on services and products.
  • Specialized portals might appeal to other segments than undergraduates.
  • Provide a knowledge base of frequently asked questions from students.

Special Events

  • Facilities issues are increasingly important. We've been seeing an increase in the number of students in the library; an increased need for group study or quiet study. We need to address real issues, not myths.
