The encounter can be even more daunting if you can't
read call numbers on the books or lack the mobility
to reach the stacks to retrieve them. But help is available.
Since the 1970s, the University Libraries has provided a variety of special aids, resources, and services for people with disabilities. Equipment for the blind and visually impaired includes: a Xerox/Kurzweil Personal Reader, which converts print into synthesized speech, IBM and Macintosh computers, both with large screens for the visually impaired and Artic Vision Synthesized Speech to access LIAS and Word Perfect 5.1 for blind patrons; a scanner equipped to convert print into electronic format to be read using the synthetic speech or that can be downloaded to a computer disc for future use; a Laserwriter Select Laser Printer capable of producing many type fonts and many sizes of large print; a Braille Blazer Braille Printer; tape cassette player-recorders; speech calculators and compressors; and other electronic devices. In addition, other low vision aids and Braille slate and stylus are available.
Patrons can arrange to use the services and equipment by contacting the coordinator of Library Services for People with Disabilities at 865-0284. For night or weekend use, arrangements should be made in advance if at all possible. Most equipment must be used in Pattee Library, but some may be borrowed on short-term loans.
