The Rare Books Room's
holdings include a large
collection of material
pertaining to Juan and Eva
Perón. Here are a
few of the items now on
display in the East
Corridor Gallery:
Argentinean Children's Books, 1953-1955
During the Perón years, Evita was everywhere. Young children learning to read were immediately exposed to her smiling, kindly face, as in this first-grade reader (at right) titled simply Evita, published in 1953, the year after her death.
Third- and Fourth-Grade Readers, 1954-1955
Argentina's history and bright future under Perón were conveyed to school children in readers like these. Mensaje de Luz (Message of Light, 1955) and La Argentina de Perón (Perón's Argentina, 1954) are general histories of Argentina; the first includes excerpts from Evita's own writings. Both are characterized by the romanticization of agriculture and industry typical of Perón era children's books.
