History

The history of our library collection is one of dramatic change. From its humble beginnings in the Bunker Hill Building, to its present location within Ciletti Library, the library collection has developed to meet the needs of faculty and students alike.

1939 - 1948 Bunker Hill Building
1948 - 1967 Mahantongo St. Building

1994 to present Ciletti Memorial Library

Bunker Hill Building
1939 Mrs. Florence Johnson served as librarian during this time. Adult Education Class in the Bunker Hill Building.
1948 Record albums added to the library. The albums are available for SUC students to rent at 10 cents/copy.
1948 Traveling Art Exhibit displayed at the library.

Mahantongo St. Building

1948 Library moves to Mahantongo Street Building in October of 1948. When students were asked how they liked the new building, one commented: "At least we don't have to study in the boiler room. The library is very cozy and quiet, and I feel I'm really accomplishing some proper studying."
1949 Mrs. J. DeNicola is appointed college librarian and instructor in English composition. Library patrons at Mahantongo St., Oct. 1958.
1959 Helen "Miss D" Devendorf appointed as college librarian.
1960 A Library Club was started at the Penn State Center.

Main Floor of Classroom Building

1968 Mr. Joseph Costa is appointed librarian. He serves until 1982.
1968 Telefacsimile devices now link nearly all the Pennsylvania State University Commonwealth Campus Libraries with Pattee Library at University Park. This network is the first in the country considered to be completely successful. Patron at C building library
1974 Tapestry depicting the campus made by Mrs. Marian Beil and presented to the campus as a gift from the sophomore class. The tapestry currently hangs in the Reading Room of Ciletti Library.

Lower Level of Classroom Building

1979 Schuylkill Library moved from main floor of classroom building to lower level.
1979 Edward G. Fox donated his collection of Pennsylvania German books to the campus, thus creating the library's “Special Collections".
1983 Michael Wescott Loder appointed as head librarian. Library begins to provide audio-visual services.
1987 Conrad Richter books and memorabilia donated to the library by his daughter, Harvena Richter.
1991 New Library site is dedicated during the summer. Library in lower level of C Building

Ciletti Memorial Library

1993 "Necho Allen Discovering Coal," a mural by George Benjamin Luks was refursbished. The mural currently hangs in the Reading Room. Necho Allen Discovering Coal
1994 Library collection is moved from the Classroom Building by campus student, staff, and faculty workers.
1995 The library is officially dedicated to the memory of Fred Ciletti.
2005 Ten-Year Anniversary celebration is held. Guests include: Dr. Nancy Eaton, Dr. Harold Shill, and Dr. Madlyn Hanes.
