Worthington Scranton Campus Library

        Library Information Access System (LIAS)

WHAT is LIAS?
LIAS is a gateway to various information resources. It includes The CAT (catalog of items owned by the University Libraries), many commercial databases to which the University Libraries subscribe, indexes and abstracts, electronic journals, access to other library catalogs, and more.

How do I access LIAS?
You can use LIAS on workstations at all Libraries' locations, at the Center for Academic Computing labs, or remotely from home through dial access with a modem.

The Library now has 26 laptops for wireless communication. They provide full access to LIAS, and are equipped with Microsoft Office 2000 applications, Netscape, Internet Explorer, Acrobat Reader, and the standard plug-ins. Laptops are available for loan from the Circulation desk, for in-house use only.

WHAT is on LIAS?
The CAT lists the collections of the University Park Campus, as well as collections at each of the campuses in the Commonwealth College, Abington College, Altoona College, Behrend College, Berks-Lehigh Valley College, and Capital College. The CAT lists books, documents, journal titles, recordings, videos, scores, maps, Penn State theses, computer files and conference proceedings.

Indexes and abstracts to a variety of subjects provide access to articles in journals, book chapters, and reports. There are over 300 databases available to Penn State students, faculty, and staff through LIAS.

Electronic journals and library catalogs from the Big Ten universities are also available for searching.

HOW do I get help?
Throughout the year, special LIAS training classes are held. Check with the library staff for times and locations. Also, the staff is always willing to assist with on-the-spot training.

HOW do I get materials from other campuses or libraries?
Just about all materials are available through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). ILLiad, is the new electronic system for requesting items through Interlibrary Loan. You can directly process your ILL requests for libraries throughout the nation. You may access at https://ill.libraries.psu.edu/ or through the ILL Web site. You can also ask a library staff member for an explanation of how to request ILL materials.
