The following patrons may borrow library materials: students, faculty, and staff of the University, and non-University patrons who have received permission from the University Libraries. The standard period for regular loans is four weeks. Faculty, graduate, and honors students may request semester loans.

HOW do I get a library card?
Students, faculty, and staff use their Penn State picture IDs to register at the Library for borrowing privileges. You must fill out a registration card every time your address changes.

HOW many books can I check out at a time?
Faculty, graduate students, and honors students may have a total of 200 items checked out at any time; undergraduates and staff may have 50 items checked out; and others may have a total of 8.

HOW long can I keep the material?
Undergraduates and others may keep their materials (except course reserves) for four weeks. Graduate students, faculty, staff, and honors students may keep material for a semester.

WHAT can I do if I need materials that are checked out?
Any user registered with the University Libraries is able to register a recall of items that are currently charged out. Patrons are directed to any service desk and a staff member will recall the items for you. You will receive a notice when the items are returned. Recalls can take up to three weeks.

    CAN I renew materials?
Yes, you can renew items twice via the Libraries' home page (click on the "My Library Account" link), by telephone, (570) 963-2636; by e-mail to wscrant@psulias.psu.edu; or in person. You can also use the "My Library Account" page to check which materials are charged out to you, determine when they are due, and print out the information, if needed. If after two renewals you still need an item, you must bring it into the Library and renew it in person.

WHAT happens if I do not return books or other materials on time?
If you return special permission loans or recalled materials after the due date, you will be charged a fine for each day the materials are late. After 10 days, the Libraries will send you an overdue reminder. If you still don’t bring in the materials, the Libraries will send you a bill which can add up to big bucks. See the University Libraries Lending Code (http://www.libraries.psu.edu/pubinfo/lendingcode.html) for "Penalties and Assessments."

WHAT happens if I lose or ruin any library materials?
You will have to pay actual replacement cost, a $12 processing fee, and a $3 search and mailing fee for each item.

WHAT happens if I try to leave the Library without checking out materials?
An exit security system will sound an alarm and the turnstile will lock.
