Getting Started

Some major industries are well documented, and you may find yourself inundated with information. Most industries, however, are more narrowly defined, and you will have to consult a number of sources to piece together a comprehensive overview. In this case, a useful strategy may be to study particular companies within an industry.

A variety of sources are included: web sites, print sources available in the University Libraries, and news databases provided by the University Libraries. If you need help locating a specific type of information or media source either on the Internet or in the library, please ask for additional help in the News and Microforms Library (Ground Floor, Pattee, West) or the Social Sciences Library (2nd Floor Paterno Library). The staff and librarians in both libraries will be able to provide additional recommendations to help you with your specific assignment.

Please note: Selected Internet resources in this guide will only be accessible to Pennsylvania State University students and researchers with a Penn State Access Account. This guide is recommended for use by students in:

For additional help with any of these resources or to schedule an appointment, please contact Debora Cheney, Foster Communications Librarian and Head, News & Microforms Library, 814-863-1345.

Hints & Tips:

Keywords: How industries are identified can vary greatly from source to source. The video game industry is a relatively new industry that falls into and between many related industries. Is it a game industry? Is it a computer programming industry? Is it a software industry? Or, are you also interested in the computer equipment/hardware industry? As you search you will need to think of a wide variety of terms and use them within each database until you determine which term produces the results most relevant to your search in each database. Some possible keywords: toys and games; electronics; consumer electronics; computer games; video games; computer software; information technology; computer software.

"Back door" search strategy: use a company or product name in many sources and determine with which "industry group" it has been identified.

Market Research Reports

Market research firms publish reports that cover many factors relating to the market environment for a specific product or service. These reports are very labor intensive to produce and keep up-to-date. Therefore, these market research reports can be very expensive and are usually not available in libraries. Students and small businesses usually opt to spend time finding the many pieces of information themselves.
