Acquisition Information
The items in this
collection belong to three discrete collections: two named collections, the
Ammon Stapleton Collection and the Allison-Shelley Collection, and the general
manuscript collection.
The
Pennsylvania German broadsides and Fraktur,
1780-1908 , form part of the
Ammon Stapleton Collection. The
Ammon Stapleton Collection contains over six
hundred volumes printed in Pennsylvania and Europe in the German language in
the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. Stapleton, a pastor and
bibliographer from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, died in 1916. Included in his
collection are specimens from the noted press of Christopher Sauer in
Germantown, books published by Conrad Beissel's Ephrata Community, a good run
of early music instruction books, and many examples from the presses of minor
printers in small towns and villages across the state. There are also
German-language newspapers, broadsides, and one fine example of a Vorschrift,
or writing specimen. The collection was a gift in 1982 from Mrs. Georgianna
Hartzel, the granddaughter of the Reverend Ammon Stapleton.
The
Pennsylvania German broadsides and Fraktur,
1772-1865, forms part of the
Allison-Shelley Collection of German Literature in
English Translation. The collection, consisting of books, letters,
manuscripts, and drawings, was bequeathed to The Pennsylvania State University
Libraries in 1972 by Philip Allison Shelley. Dr. Shelley, professor of German
and comparative literature at Penn State, had gathered these materials over a
period of forty years. Significant material is added to the original bequest
each year through a fund endowed by Professor Shelley.
The
Pennsylvania German broadsides and Fraktur,
1750-1979, form part of the general manuscript collection, and have
been and are acquired through gifts and purchases.

Letter from Heaven, one of the earliest recorded chain
letters, was first published in Magdeburg in 1783 and attributed to Jesus. The
letter describes how to live a good Christian life, and promises to act as a
charm against certain disasters, and as a general good-luck charm. Fogel notes,

There are two versions, a longer and a shorter, which differ materially as to
content. In the longer form, the prayer is longer, more elaborate and rather
rhetorical, and it also contains a curse on all those who refuse to obey the
