The Special Collections Library has begun mounting selected finding aids and handlists on the Web, representing only a small portion of the processed collections. The majority of authors' collections range from one letter to one folder of mixed materials (letters, manuscript drafts, broadsides, etc.) that are gradually being cataloged in the national online database OCLC (WorldCat), RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network), and Penn State's online catalog The CAT.
These alphabetical lists of authors' names represents a quick index to both the uncataloged collections and those fully cataloged (annotated with an asterisk (*)). When you see an asterisk (*), for full information about the collection, go to The CAT
, select the tab, Browse Titles & More. On the next screen, in Step 2: Enter Word or Phrase, enter the author's name (first name, last name); in Step 3: Choose Library select Special Collections Library (UP) from the drop-down menu; in Step 4: Click Search Type, choose Title. From the results find the entry that begins with the author's first name and includes either letters, papers, or a combination (letters, poems, and photo, etc.) as part of the title. Click on this to view the full description of our holdings. An alternative way to search is at Step 2: Enter Word or Phrase, enter the author's name (last name, first name) and in Step 4: Click Search Type, choose Author. From the results click on the author's name and on the next screen scroll down until you find the entry that begins with the author's first name under a numerical call number that includes VF (for vertical file location). If there are more than twenty hits, click on the Next button at the bottom of the screen until you find the manuscript entry.
The majority of the collections represented by these alphabetical lists are not yet cataloged and you will need to contact the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts (Sandra Stelts sks5@psulias.psu.edu) to ascertain the extent and nature of our holdings.
