Biographical Note

William Allison opened a store in July 1827 with James and John Potter at Browns Mills (now Reedsville, Pa.). When the firm dissolved in 1829, Allison carried on the business alone for a few years, moved to Spring Mills, and in 1847, as a significant creditor, purchased the factory, hotel, and real estate at Potters Mills (Centre Co., Pa.) when the brothers' business failed. Allison relocated to Potters Mills and moved into James' residence.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of the financial records of Messrs. Potter and Allison, a mercantile and manufacturing business in Potters Mills, Pa., including bank drafts from the Bank of Lewistown; receipts and bills, including those for William Allison's father Archibald Allison; promissory notes; Philip Benner's accounts and receipts; a leather-bound index to a ledger [not extant], circa 1826; six business letters, 1824-1852; and a broadside for the public sale of personal property of Col. W. Frederick Reynolds, Bellefonte, Pa. who died in 1941.
