The photograph
collection is the most heavily used collection in the University Archives.
The collection has almost 500,000 photographs in 1000 boxes. The collection
consists of mainly black and white prints, but also includes color
prints, oversized photos (larger than 8”x 10”), and slides.
Each box contains several sub-headings under the various subjects.
When viewing the
photographs, patrons must wear gloves while handling the photographs,
and retain the order of photos within each folder and box.
The photographs
are separated into the following subjects:

- Administration
- Arts
- Athletics
- Commonwealth Education System
- Events
- Physical Plant
- Portraits - Faculty and famous people who have visited Penn State
- University Presidents
- Students
- Town and Environs
- Transportation and Communication
There
are several methods of obtaining copies of photographs.
- You may use your own
camera.
- There is a free public
scanner located in the Special Collections reference room that will
scan photos at 150 dpi.
- University Archives
staff can scan images at either 150 dpi or 300 dpi (publication
quality) for a fee.
- Prints can be ordered
through a local photographer for a fee.
Commercial uses
of photographs must be approved by University Archives staff, and in
some cases, by University Licensing (814-865-0356). Please consult a
staff member for a listing of the fees.
