Registration

The Special Collections Library welcomes the public--students, faculty, staff, visiting researchers, and members of the community--to its facility on the first floor of Paterno Library.

  • Proceed to the Reception desk in Special Collections and present government or university-issued photo identification.  Receive a key for a locker to store coats, book bags, and other materials not needed for research.
  • Then proceed to the Reference desk to consult with staff.  Fill out a patron registration form, which also serves as a request form for materials, and present photo identification again.  Non-Penn State users may be required to register for a PSU guest card to use materials.  Signing the registration form indicates agreement to comply with the rules and procedures as outlined.
  • Materials do not circulate and must be used in the Reading room.   Most of the collections are held in closed stacks.  Requested materials will be paged by staff and brought to researchers in the Reading room.
  • Although no appointments are required, out-of-town researchers interested in using archival and manuscript collections should call (814-865-7931) or email in advance, as some collections are housed in the Library's annex and take 48 to 72 hours to arrive.
  • Please note that certain materials may not be available for research due to restrictions imposed by donors or to protect the privacy of individuals.  In addition, fragile and other materials which have deteriorated may be removed from public access and you may be asked to use preservation copies, where they exist, instead of original documents.
