Copying

  • Request permission from staff for any type of copying. Copying of certain materials may be prohibited because of restrictions imposed by donors, the physical condition, value of materials, or intellectual property reasons.
  • The following types of copies can be made for charges indicated on the fee schedule.
    • Plain paper photocopies
    • Digital scans
    • Photographic copies
    • Copies from microfilm or microfiche
    • Audio or video dubbing
  • Only staff members may copy Rare Books materials. Please request copies of Rare Books materials at the reference desk. Other types of loose documents, photographs, and bound volumes may be copied on self-service copiers or on the public scanning terminal. However, patrons must always request permission to make copies.
  • Because of preservation concerns and other restrictions, we generally do not permit researchers to bring in their own scanning or audio-visual copying equipment to do copy work. However, we may permit patrons to use their own digital cameras to make copies of large format or other materials that are difficult to scan safely.

    WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
