Beginning
January 1, 2005 the University Libraries will be replacing library
cards for our resident borrowers.
The
first time you use the Libraries after this date, you will be issued
a new card at no cost to you. All your transaction information will
remain the same and will be transferred to your new ID.
Frequently
Asked Questions:
Q:
Why do I need a new card?
A:
With concerns about identity theft, Penn State University decided
to no longer use the Social Security number as a primary identifier.
University Libraries systems were converted in December 2004 to
eliminate the Social Security number as a primary identifier. As
of this date, the Libraries no longer has or retains any reference
to your Social Security number. Your old card (issued prior to January
1, 2005) used your Social Security number. Your new card will use
the 9-digit number printed on the back of the card. Patrons who
were already using the number on the back of the card will still
be issued a new card.
Q:
How
do I get a new card?
A: You need to go to your nearest
University Libraries circulation desk. There is a circulation desk
at Pattee Library, at any branch library on University Park campus,
and at any campus library throughout Pennsylvania. Please take your
old card with you. A ciruculation staff member will take your old
card and issue you a new one. There is no charge for this new card.
At this time, your old account will be transferred to your new number.
Q: What
about my original library registration information and my book checkouts
and holds?
A:
All your personal information and library transactions will still
be in our library system. However, during conversion, your Social
Security number was replaced with a temporary number. The sytem
no longer retains any reference to your Social Security number.
When you receive your new card, the number on the back of the card
will be entered into the system as your primary identifier.
Q: What
does my new card look like?
A: Your new card is blue with the
Nittany Lion on it. On the back there is a place for you to sign
and a bold-faced nine-digit number in the lower right-hand corner.
This number is your new library ID. This new card is called an id+
card.

Q:
What is an id+ card?
A: The id+ card can be used for more
than just checking out library books. With the id+ card you can
set up a LionCash+ account to be used for copying, printing and
purchases in participating establishments.
Q: What
is a LionCash+ account?
A: A LionCash+ account is an online
prepaid debit account which allows you to put funds on your library
id+ card. There are no fees to establish or use the account. With
these funds, you can use the copiers in the library. You can also
use the card for purchases at participating merchants.
For
availability of these services at campuses other than University
Park, please check at your local campus library.
Q: How
do I set up a LionCash+ account?
A: A LionCash+ account can be set
up by visiting http://www.idcard.psu.edu/
and making an initial deposit.
Under 'quick links' select add funds.
This will take you to a secure website where you can set up an account
and deposit funds on your account. Your account is the nine-digit
number on the back of your card.
On
this page, you need to fill in two fields:
1)
In the ID field you will enter the 9-digit
number on the back of your card.
2)
In the Last Name field you will enter
the word "librarycard" ...
then click on Continue to Deposit.
This
will take you to a secure website where you can deposit funds with
your credit card.
Q: How
do I add funds to my id+ account?
A:
All
deposits from the web, a Value Transfer Station and the id+ office
are updated immediately on your account.
You
can put funds on your id+ card online with a credit card, with cash
at a Value Transfer Station (there are 5 in Pattee and Paterno Libraries),
or cash, check, or credit card in the id+ Card office in 103 HUB-Robeson.
Your
fund limit is $50.
Q: What
information is stored on my id+ account?
A:
There is no personal information stored about you
on your id+ account. Your account only retains the 9-digit number
on the back of your card and the cash amount you placed on it. Librarycard
will show in the name field. For your privacy, no credit card or
personal information is retained on the account website.
When
you make a deposit on the web site, you can enter an email address
for receipt confirmation.
Q:
What if I lose my card?
A: You
will be issued a new card with a new number. All your personal and
transaction information will be transferred to your new number.
There is a $5 replacement fee for lost cards.
If
you had a LionCash+ account on your old card, tell circulation staff
and they will contact the ID+ office to transfer your funds to the
number on your new library id+ card.
