  1. General Information

    2. This field contains three-character alphabetic codes for languages associated with an item when Lang in the Fixed Fields area is insufficient to convey full information for a multilingual item or a translation. (See also MARC Code List for Languages.)

  2. Processing Instructions

    3. In general, accept copy. Some older records have the 1st indicator (blank), which is obsolete and may be updated to either 0 or 1.

    Field 546 may also be used to record language information.
