- General Information
This field contains varying forms of the title appearing on different parts of an item, portions of the title proper, or alternative forms of titles. Record these variant titles in field 246 only if they differ substantially from the title statement in field 245 and if they contribute to further identification of the item.
When displayed/printed as a note, varying forms of titles are usually preceded by an introductory term or phrase that is generated as a display constant based on the second indicator value.
- Processing Instructions
In general, accept copy, but correct indicators that are obviously incorrect and add 246s as necessary when missing. The 246 does NOT end in a period, unless it is part of the variant title.
Initial Articles
- Drop initial articles from field 246.
5XX Notes
- When 246 indicator one is value 1, a 500 note is automatically generated using the display constant specified by the second indicator. Do not add a 500 note.
