  1. General Information
  2. The 250 field contains information relating to the edition of a work.

See Terms Used in Call Numbers and Princeton's abbreviations page for lists of foreign terms and abbreviations.

  3. Processing Instructions
  4. The edition statement on an item should match the information in the 250 field. If it differs, examine the record closely to determine whether it is an exact match or near copy.

When the 250 in copy appears in brackets and the item lacks an edition statement, accept copy as found if all else matches.

When copy is missing an edition statement but everything else matches, consider the book a match and add the 250 field.

When full LC copy contains an edition statement that is not present on the item but all else matches, delete the 250 from copy.

When a full record with holdings in The CAT contains an edition statement that is not present on the item in hand but all else matches, accept the 250 as found. Do not delete it.

Individually numbered limited editions are not recorded in The CAT except for Special Collection items.
