  1. General Information
  2. The 740, title added entry field, is used to record analytic title added entries for independent works contained within the item and titles of related works when they are not controlled through an authority file or another bibliographic record. It may also contain title added entries for other significant titles present in the item (see Collections).

In pre-1995 records, this field may contain a form of the title that is different from the title proper. When adding varying forms of the title proper and titles from sources other than the chief source of information, use field 246. For reprints of early works published under different titles, off prints of serials, and original titles of translated works, use field 240 or 730. Refer as necessary.

  3. Processing Instructions
  4. Accept as found in copy unless obviously wrong. Add missing analytical entries when the item in hand contains the work represented by the added entry. Refer as necessary.

    Records Entered Before 1995

Accept 740s as found in copy if they correspond to information on the item. Do not edit for stylistic reasons. Use current standards to create new fields.
