described on the same catalog record (at the end of the collation
or in a note), and may be shelved separately or housed with the
main item, e.g., in a pocket.
Added title page

at the beginning or at the end of the work.

(Inventory Control Program, or ICP). It is a "zebra code" or "product
code" label bearing a unique number represented by varying width
stripes, which is intended to be "read" by a light pen. see also
Item number. The Cataloging Department writes barcode numbers

to a cataloging record by the Library of Congress. LCCNs are also
assigned to publishers in advance of publication, so that the
number may be printed in the item or used in advertising the item.
The LCCN is used as an access point to a bibliographic record
in LIAS and in national databases. The LCCN was formerly referred
to as the LC Card Number. We still use this older name on some
of the forms used in CES cataloging.

authorized subject headings used by LC in cataloging. Used also
by PSU and most U.S. academic libraries.

CAT), holdings in all formats added since 1981, and records for
most UP and CES titles cataloged before 1981.
LIAS number
The unique control number sequentially assigned to a catalog
record as it enters The CAT. The number displays in arrowed brackets
at the upper left corner of the MARC screen. It is a unique access
point. Formerly called Register number.

libraries, special collections, or shelving areas. Any given library
may have several locations, each of which has its own code. The

in the 090$c, but displays as a full name, and its address within
the library, on the record, or public display.
MARC - MAchine Readable Cataloging
Refers to the data elements and format used to code ("tag")
the information in a bibliographic record. LIAS uses the MARC
tagging conventions to input and store bibliographic records.
MARC record
The name for the Library of Congress catalog record, directly
accessible through LIAS, and used for cataloging when available.
Also called LCMARC.
MLP - Minimal Level Processing.
A function in processing a new item by which an item with no
available cataloging copy receives a brief bibliographic record;
the record is accessible on LIAS. UP items can then be shelved
in a closed area and yet be used while they await full cataloging;
CES items have MLP records in LIAS only until all cataloging problems
are resolved.

which is ordered through the Acquisitions Services, but sent from
the distributor directly to the campus. The title is cataloged
from a surrogate supplied by the campus after the item is received.
Serial
A publication issued in successive parts bearing numerical or
chronological designations and intended to be continued indefinitely.
Series
A group of separate monographic items related to one another
by the fact that each item bears, in addition to its own title,
a collective title applying to the group as a whole. The individual

usually have its own title page and pagination; it may or may
not be bound separately. Physically, a volume consists of all
of a multipart item that is contained in one cover. The number
of physical volumes may or may not coincide with the number of
bibliographic volumes in a work. The term, volume, should not
be used to mean copy. See also Bibliographic volume, Physical
volume(s).
Volume designator

[year]; number (no.); Band (Bd.); tome (t.), etc. Usually followed
by a number(s), sometimes by a letter, etc. - see also Bibliographic
