Bound-withs

1. Definitions and cataloging policy

A bound-with is an item containing two or more works bound together after publication by someone other than the publisher. An issued-with is two or more works intended by the publisher to constitute a single publication. If in doubt, consider the titles to be bound-withs.

General cataloging policy: Create a separate record in The CAT for each work in a bound-with. Create a single record in The CAT for an issued-with; this record describes all of the titles in the item and provides author and/or title access to all the titles.

After using this procedure to create the records needed, use the Bound With Wizard to create links between the records. It is very important not to create copy records for Bound with titles after the first title; only the first title should have an Item ID and Home Location. Subsequent titles should have Auto-generated call numbers and be in the same Library as the first title.

A bound-with volume may contain items that were issued together. See the final example in section 6 of the documentation in Issued-withs.

2. Searching for copy

Search for exact copy for each work contained in the bound-with volume.

3. First title in the item

Create a record in The CAT for the first work. Add a 591 field that includes the titles proper for the second and all subsequent items as illustrated below. If the author of the work is known, give the author's name in direct order following the title of each work, preceded by a space-slash-space ( / ). Include edition statements if they appear on the title page. Include the imprint for each item; when multiple places of publication are given on the title page, separate them by a space-semicolon-space ( ; ).

Do not make 246s or 740s for the titles given in the 591 field, nor 700 fields for the authors. Include a complete call number with Home Location and Item ID.

Examples:

The first example below contains five items bound together.

050 4PT2389 |b.U4 1840
100 2La Motte-Fouque, Friedrich Heinrich Karl |cFreiherr de, |d1777-1843.
24510Undine, or, The water-spirit . . .
591 With this is bound: Abdalla the Moor and the Spanish knight / Robert Montgomery Bird. London : J. Cunningham, 1839 -- The red rover / James Fenimore Cooper. London : J. Cunningham, 1839 -- The Green Mountain boys / Daniel Pierce Thompson. London : J. Cunningham, 1840 -- The Hawks of Hawk-Hollow / Robert Montgomery Bird. London : J. Cunningham, 1839.

050 4BS540 |bW3 1761
100 1Ward, John, |d1679?-1758.
245 10Dissertations upon several passages of the sacred scriptures / |cby John Ward.
591 With v. 2 is bound: A dissertation on the demoniacs in the Gospels / Thomas Newton. London : Printed for John and Francis Rivington . . . , 1775 -- Observations on various subjects / John Caspar Velthusen. London : printed for C. Heydinger, 1773.

4. Subsequent titles

Create a separate record in The CAT for each subsequent title; these will be the Child records. Add a 591 to each record that includes only information about the first item in the volume. Include the title, author, edition statement, and imprint, as shown above.

Do Not create a copy record; allow the system to Auto-generate a call number. There should be no Item ID or Home Location; the Library must be the same as the Parent Record. Write down the Title Control No. or Call Number, which will be needed when linking the records using the Bound With Wizard.

Examples:

24510Abdalla the Moor and the Spanish knight . . .
591 Bound with: Undine, or, The water spirit / Friedrich Heinrich Karl La Motte-Fouqué. London : J. Cunningham, 1840.

100 1Newton, Thomas, |d1704-1782.
245 12A dissertation on the demoniacs in the Gospels.
591Bound with v. 2 of: Dissertations upon several passages of the sacred
scriptures / John Ward. London : Printed for W. Johnston . . . , 1761-1774
Create a record in The CAT for each bound with title, recording the Title Control Number or Call Number for later use. In general, it seems more effective to create all of the records before creating the links with the Bound With Wizard.

5. Copies of titles in a bound-with

When a copy of one of the items in a bound-with exists as a separate item in The CAT, create a single record that includes information about all copies. In the 591 field and in any notes referring to the one or the other but not all copies, include a term such as "one copy"or "second copy" or "Pattee Rare Books Room copy". In general, any numbering should follow the order of the 090 fields and the bound-with copy should be last.

Examples:

1001Burnet, Gilbert, |d1643-1715.
24512A sermon preached at the funeral . . .
590One copy inserted in pambinder with pocket, 28 cm.
590Second copy lacks final leaf (E4)
591Second copy bound with: A sermon preached at Flitton in the countie of Bedford . . . / John Bowle. London : Printed by William Stansby for Richard Woodroffe, 1615.

100 1Adams, John Quincy, |d1767-1848.
245 10Oration on the life and character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette . . .
591Second copy bound with: Eulogium in commemoration of the Hon. Bushrod Washington . . . / by Joseph Hopkinson. Philadelphia : T.S. Manning, printer, 1830.
593Microform |bWashington, D.C. |cMicrocard Editions |d1957 |e 3 microfiches ; 8 x 13 cm. . . .

6. Miscellaneous procedures

A single call number is assigned to a bound-with. It may be based either on the first work in the volume.

Send only the first ORF packet to CatMarking; return the additional ORF packets to the Rare Books Room with the item.

Count each title as if it were a separate item. Do not count items already online as mono uncats; these are considered to be MLP. For items added to existing records for other copies (see section 5 above), count as added copies.
