Copy Cataloging Guidelines

Note: when adding data, use AACR2 rules. Differentiate between local practices and national.

Fixed Field Scan for errors in coding or data, including date type, dates, language, country, other elements as determined. Be aware of Type, Encoding Level and Desc. (what they mean, and why the codes are relevant)
010 In general, accept copy, add if missing (use Record Creation 010 guidelines for when to put it in $a or $z).
020 Verify, correct, or add.
040 Do not accept copy if 040$b (language code) is present. Otherwise, accept copy. We only accept English language cataloging records.
050/090 Evaluate for completeness and applicability; consider Special Collections needs; refer if necessary (eventually, can adjust cutter).
1XX Verify authority form; correct as needed; create NACO, as needed; do not change cataloging without specific reason.
240 Verify, correct, or add.
245 Verify and correct; carefully check for typos and completeness; add 245c when lacking on copy.
246 Verify, correct, or add.
250 Verify, correct, or add.
260 Verify, correct, or add.
300 Verify, correct, or add.
4XX/8XX Verify, correct, or add.
5XX Verify that notes apply to our copy, delete as necessary; add as needed; add 505s when appropriate; add notes for Penn State specific information.
6XX Verify presence of subjects; verify form if questionable; refer if needed; Add 655s if appropriate.
7XX Verify authority form, correct or add as needed; always add for PSU people; add for printers, translators, illustrators, publishers, etc.; create NACO as needed.
