Issued-withs

1. Definitions and cataloging policy

An issued-with is two or more titles intended by the publisher to constitute a single publication. A bound-with is an item containing two or more titles bound together after publication by someone other than the publisher.

Clues that may indicate that an item is an issued with are:

If in doubt, consider the titles to be bound-withs.

General cataloging policy: Create a single record in The CAT for an issued-with; this record describes all of the titles in the item and provides author and/or title access to all the titles. Create a separate record in The CAT for each title in a bound-with.

A bound-with volume may contain items that were issued together. See the final example in section 6.

2. Searching for copy

Search for copy for each title contained in the issued-with, but accept as matching copy only a single record that describes all of the titles. Use information from the separate records (name and title entries, notes, subject headings) in creating the issued-with record.

3. Description: items with a collective title

If the chief source for the item contains a collective title (a title that applies to all the works), record the collective title in field 245. If the separate titles as well as the collective title appear on the title page, give them in field 505 rather than field 245. [AACR2 1.1B10]

Example:

245 10 Dickens' new stories.
505 0Hard times -- Pictures from Italy.

4. Description: items without a collective title

If there is no collective title, but there is a single title page that includes the titles of all the works, transcribe each of the titles from that title page in the order they appear, as instructed below. If there is no single title page, transcribe the title information from each of the separate title pages in the order they appear, as instructed below.

a. Single author

If all the works are by the same author, transcribe each title with its other title information. Precede the other title information by a space-colon-space ( : ). Separate each title statement by a space-semicolon-space ( ; ). The statement of responsibility (subfield c) follows all the titles. Place the subfield b following the title proper of the first work. [AACR2 1.1G3/DCRB 1E]

Example:

100 1Macaulay, Thomas Babington Macaulay |cBaron |d1800-1859.
240 10Essays.
245 10 Lord Macaulay's essays ; |band, Lays of ancient Rome.
700 12Macaulay, Thomas Babington Macaulay |cBaron |d1800-1859. |tLays of ancient Rome.

b. Multiple authors

If the works are by different authors, transcribe each title with its other title information and its statement of responsibility. Precede any other title information by a space-colon space ( : ). Precede any statement of responsibility by a space-slash-space ( / ). Place the subfield b before the other title information for the first work; if there is no other title information for the first work, there will be no subfield b in the field. Place the subfield c before the statement of responsibility for the first work or (if there is no statement of responsibility for the first work) before the title of the second work. Separate the information relating to each work by a period-space (. ). [AACR2 1.1G3/DCRB 1E]

Example:

100 1Thackeray, William Makepeace, |d1811-1863.
240 10History of Henry Esmond.
245 10Henry Esmond : |ba novel |cby Thackeray. Bleak House : a novel / by Dickens.
700 12Dickens, Charles, |d1812-1870. |tBleak House.

c. Accompanying works

If the titles of notes, appendices, and other accompanying works appear on the title page of the main work -- e.g., preceded by a phrase such as "To which are added, . . ." -- treat the item as an issued-with, even if the accompanying works are separately paged. Transcribe the title information pertaining to the accompanying works in the order in which the information appears on the title page, i.e., if the information appears before the statement of responsibility for the main work, transcribe it as other title information; if it appears after the statement of responsibility, transcribe it as a subsequent statement of responsibility. [DCRB 1G14]

Examples:

245 10 Clarion call : |bwith Franklin Phelp's criticisms / |cby Lunceford Yates.
245 14 The history of the rights of princes in the disposing of ecclesiastical benefices and church-lands : |bRelating chiefly to the pretensions of the crown of France to the regale, and the late contests with the court of Rome : to which is added, a collection of letters written on that occasion, and of some other remarkable papers put in an appendix / |cBy Gilbert Burnet.
300110, [8], 328, 235 p. ; |c19cm.

5. Main entry

a. Main entry -- one author

If a single author is responsible for all the works, make the main entry (100) under the heading for that author.

If there are only two works, check the authority file to see whether a uniform title for that work has been established. If so, give that uniform title in field 240. If no uniform title has been established, omit field 240. Make an author/title added entry (700|a/|t) for the second work. Again, check the authority file to see whether a uniform title has been established. If so, give the uniform title in 700|t; if not, give the title proper of the second work in 700|t. [AACR2 25.7A]

Example:

100 1Dickens, Charles, |d1812-1870.
240 10Hard times.
245 10 Dickens' new stories.
505 0Hard times -- Pictures from Italy.
700 12Dickens, Charles, |d1812-1870. |tPictures from Italy.
If there are more than two works, make a 240 with the uniform title, "Selections".

b. Main entry -- two or more authors

If the works are by two or more authors, make the title the main entry. [AACR2 21.7B-C] Make author/title added entries (700|a/|t) for each work if there are no more than three; otherwise, do not make author/title added entries {unless requested by RBR?}. Check the authority file to see whether uniform titles have been established for any of the works; if so, give the uniform title in 700|t; if not, give the title proper in 700|t. [LCRI 21.7B]

Example:

245 00Classic Irish drama / |cintroduced by W.A. Armstrong.

700 12 O'Casey, Sean |d1880-1964. |tCock-a-doodle dandy.
700 1Armstrong, William A.
If there are four or more works by no more than three authors, see LCRI 21.7B.

6. An issued-with in a bound-with volume

A bound-with volume may contain items that were issued together. In such a case, create a single record for the items issued together, and add a 591 field as instructed in the bound-withs documentation.

Example:

The libretto and Gatty's essay were issued together; both are bound with a copy of the score.
