If you suspect that an item-in-hand belongs to a special collection, but the accompanying packet does not give an indication of this, confer with the Rare Books and Manuscripts staff.
Occasionally, a book belongs to one special collection, but because of its size or value it is shelved elsewhere. Rare Books and Manuscripts staff will take care of this, or provide guidelines for noting the difference.
Portions of Rare Books and Manuscripts holdings have been designated as Treasure and Treasure Beaver. These items are concentrated in five specific collections. "T" for Treasure and "TB" for Treasure Beaver are used as suffixes to the call numbers. Treasure and Treasure Beaver items in all collections are generally classed in specific Dewey call numbers (except in Allison-Shelley). The "T" and "TB" suffixes, on the other hand, are used only in those collections.
Any book published in Pennsylvania before 1841 is considered a "Pennsylvania imprint". The vast majority of them are found in Allison-Shelley, Pennsylvania Almanacs, Pennsylvania Bibles, Pennsylvania Imprints, Priestley, and Stapleton.

"Gift books" is a special genre; as defined by LCSH, "...books, usually illustrated literary miscellanies, which are intended as keepsakes or gifts, especially those published annually and popular in the 19th century, as well as works about these books." These books are recognizable by the sentimental nature of the contents, often with seasonal poems and moralistic stories; they often include title pages with blanks for dedications to the recipient.
