There are two different types of Search Windows available in SmartPORT:
1. The Icon Format Search Window:
2. The Labeled Format Search Window:
You can toggle between the two windows by pressing the Search
Format button:
The Icon Format Search Window will contain a number of buttons with different icons on them to the right. You can determine what they are for by placing your mouse over the button. Alternatively you can press the enter key after typing in your search term. This will bring up a window from which you can choose the kind of search you want as shown in the figure below.
The Labeled Format Search Window has all the possible searches listed with fields available for placing search terms in them. To the right of each field is a drop-down selection list of boolean operators. By default, they are all set to AND. You may also choose OR or NOT.
There are also two types of searches available: Search or Browse (see upper left portion of either Search Window). The search option will be the usual option most people will choose. The difference between it and the browse option is that the browse option allows searching when the correct spelling of the search terms is not known. Browse results will show a list of words in a new window that can be searched upon. Most servers do not support this option and will display an error message.
[Partially Incomplete--Subject to Change]
The table below lists the types of searches supported by the various connections available. If you need to include the terms AND, OR, and NOT in your search term, place your search term in quotes (e.g. "Green eggs and hams"). The search mode assumed is a Phrase Search. If a Word Search is required in order for the search to work, it will be noted in the table.

The Icon Format Search Window also supports boolean operators and search commands. There are three buttons available for constructing searches using these:
The leftmost button clears the field, the middle button inserts an operator wherever your cursor is in the field, and the right button inserts a search command wherever your cursor is in the field. Upon pressing the middle and right buttons, you will be given a list to choose your operator and commands from. See the two figures below.
Your search terms should be surrounded by parentheses. You may nest parentheses. You can press any of the icon buttons to send the search to the server. When you have a search command in your search term, it will always override whatever icon button you press. You can also construct these searches in the Labeled Format Search Window, and again the search command will override whatever field you place the search in.

If you try the examples listed above, please make sure you search them in databases that support them.
