Collection Maintenance
Each
group has its own duties, but they share the common purpose of working
to organize the collection so it does not suffer physical damage from
congestion and so patrons can access it with ease.
The
Libraries' materials are organized primarily by the Library of Congress
classification system, but large amounts of material are also organized
using the Superintendent of Documents and Dewey Decimal systems. These
systems place a vast amount of material into a framework that makes
the collection manageable for University Libraries patrons.
Every
piece of material in Penn State's collection has one, and only one,
place in a very specific sequence. If stretched out into one long
line the collection is over thirty miles long, and each piece of material
has its own particular place in that sequence. Absolute accuracy is
required from all Collection Maintenance personnel while organizing
these materials or they will become lost. The two operations also
take care of the collections' physical distribution.
