007 and 583
Diane Hillmann reported on recent MARBI activity, including on 007 and 583
field proposals. She reported that the 007 field proposal, 99-01, was
passed, albeit with some major revisions in wording. The February issue of
RLG DigiNews
(http://www.rlg.org/preserv/diginews/diginews3-1.html)
includes a report on the final form of 007 (see the FAQ section). Less successful
before MARBI was the 583 field proposal, which was not passed.
Z39.76
Some encouraging developments in communicating library binding data
elements have piqued the Committee's interest. The Committee will continue
to follow the developments. For the next meeting at ALA Annual in New
Orleans, Committee members will study the glossary terms and data elements
for Z39.76.
Preservation Information Modules
The Committee discussed the concept of a more comprehensive,
pan-preservation module that would cover not only binding, but also
in-house treatments and other activities such as reformatting.

Report by Norma Hendrickson, liaison
The group discussed and revised its charge. The new charge reads: To provide a focus for education, research, and standards development within the Preservation and Reformatting Section for the bibliographic control of and intellectual access to preserved and reformatted materials. To coordinate these efforts with those of other entities in ALA and beyond.
The group went carefully through the RLG proposal for an expanded 007 field, which will soon be posted to the web for comment. Bob Wolven commented that the 007 has more support than the 583 for international sharing of data. BOB WOLVEN WANTS COMMENTS ON THESE PROPOSED REVISIONS TO THE 007.
The revisions for the 583 which the group agreed upon in San Francisco will be taken to MARBI by Erich Kesse. MARBI has the current version on its web site, and could put our new proposal up for discussion.
PARS and PADG are looking for topics. Preservation Management in an Integrated Library System, and Digital Archiving and Preservation are 2 topics the group will suggest to PARS and PADG.
RLG plans to take a role in preservation and storage of digitized information. There are lots of questions and no answers. A draft document from the RLG Preservation Working Group on Digital Archiving was distributed.
